This undisguised light hatch, captured testing near the Nurburgring in Germany by spy photographers Carparazzi, is expected to make its first public appearance at next year’s Paris motor show as the new Renault Clio RS.
The five-door only hot hatch will come exclusively with Renault’s new six-speed, dual-clutch automated EDC transmission and will compete with the likes of Skoda’s Fabia RS and Volkswagen’s Polo GTI.
Although the hungry front air intakes, larger rear roof spoiler, squared-off dual exhausts and monster wheels on the photo car are a given, the engine choice is a little uncertain. Most observers are saying the Clio RS will be powered by a version of the current atmo 2.0-litre engine, upgraded from 147kW to around 155kW, but some rumours are circulating Renault may opt for a smaller, blown 1.6-litre instead, similar to the BMW-developed turbo of the same size seen in the MINI Cooper, Citroen DS3 and others. However given that the sporty Renault has built its reputation on flexible, large capacity power rather than a smaller, more lag-prone turbo, most bets are that Renault will stick with the proven formula.
The Clio RS is expected to follow about six months behind the Australian launch of an extensive range of new Clios in mid 2013.
