SPY PICS: Rolls-Royce Ghost coupe

Iconic British marque hones the next addition to its range… and it promises to be the fastest offering to wear the Flying Lady emblem

Rolls-Royce is pressing on with its steady, systematic drive to broaden its model portfolio, and next in the product pipeline is a coupe version of the acclaimed Ghost.

Captured here by the Carparazzi lenses while trawling the streets of Munich (where parent company BMW is headquartered), this heavily camouflaged Ghost coupe appears to sport miniature rear doors, but these could be decoys designed to throw observers off the scent.

Apart from its coupe configuration, it’s believed the two-door (in all likelihood) Ghost will carry over much of the same design language as its limo sibling, barring a few tweaks to the grille and front bumper.

Another significant point of difference is the suicide (rear-hinged) doors worn by the coupe, in keeping with the precedent set by the larger Phantom Coupe launched four years ago.

The Ghost coupe is expected to make its public debut at next March’s Geneva Motor Show, and it will be followed in due course by a drop-head (Rolls-Royce-speak for convertible) version.

According to UK reports, the two-door Ghost will be the fastest Rolls-Royce to date, courtesy of a tuned version of the 6.6-litre twin-turbo V12 that powers the Ghost sedan. In the latter vehicle this engine puts out 420kW and 780Nm, but it’s rumoured the coupe could pack a 450kW punch, relayed to the rear wheels via the familiar eight-speed ZF automatic.

It’s believed the power hike will be complemented by tweaks to the brakes and suspension, along with a beefier wheel/tyre package, but these allegedly won’t compromise the refinement and ride comfort that are hallmarks of the iconic brand.

The Ghost coupe is shorter and lower than its four-door equivalent, and it’s likely it will also be marginally lighter than the latter, helping strengthen its positioning as a mildly sporting offering. Some sources are speculating it will pare 200kg from the Ghost sedan’s 2500kg girth.

As for what the vehicle will be called, the Corniche and Camargue nameplates have been suggested by some pundits, but it’s unlikely either of these will be used. Other options that draw on the brand’s past include Dawn, Wraith, Cloud, Shadow and Spirit.
