The eagle-eyed Automedia lenses have captured a prototype of Mercedes-Benz’s second-generation GLK compact SUV undergoing testing, prior to its anticipated launch in 2015.
Unlike the existing model – which is built solely in left-hand-drive guise – the all-new replacement will be offered with the steering wheel on either side, enabling it to be marketed as a global vehicle.
Using a derivative of the underpinnings designed for the next-gen C-Class, the new GLK will be pitched against the likes of the BMW X3 and the Audi Q5 (the latter is now also long in the tooth and due for replacement over the next year or so).
The existing GLK has polarised opinion with its boxy, upright styling, but these spy pics indicate its successor will have a more streamlined and carlike profile – in the process bringing it in line with the smaller GLA and larger ML.
Given the burgeoning volumes of the compact crossover segment, the new GLK will be a key entrant for Mercedes-Benz. As per the current model, the second-gen iteration is expected to offer refined on-road dynamics and a greater degree of off-road ability than the norm for its segment.
Broadening the GLK’s appeal will be a vast array of powertrain choices, comprising turbo four-cylinder and V6 engines that burn either diesel or petrol.
It’s believed the four-pot will be a derivative of the 2.0-litre unit used by the CLA250, albeit converted for rear-wheel-drive applications. Topping the range could be the 245kW 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 that powers the E400.
It’s believed all engines will initially be mated to Merc’s familiar 7G-Tronic seven-speed auto, with the company’s new nine-speed transmission replacing it in due course.
Timing is yet to be confirmed for the new GLK, but some sources are speculating the vehicle will be unveiled in 2015 at either the New York or Shanghai motor shows.
