This is our first look at what’s long been touted as the Toyota Stout

The Finer Details

Spotted on the Castelo Branco Highway in São Paulo, the prototype’s emergence proves Toyota is in the latter development stages for at least one compact monocoque ute, even if this one isn’t intended for global markets.

Instead, it’s thought this open-back Corolla Cross will be aimed at South and Central America with the choice of either petrol or plug-in hybrid power.

Brazil and its neighbours are arguably the hotspot for compact monocoque utes with the Fiat Toro, RAM Rampage, Ford Maverick and Chevrolet Montana all being offered locally, so it’d make sense for Toyota to want a slice of the pie.

It’s unlikely this particular (light) load-lugger will be offered here or even in North America, however, seeing as US executives recently confirmed to Automotive News “a RAV4-based pick-up is an opportunity” and that “dealers are waiting” – a sure indication of the direction North America wants to take.

The Road Ahead

Even so, these images out of Brazil unequivocally confirm the world’s biggest brand is indeed readying at least one compact monocoque ute aimed at those with a need for more utilitarianism than an SUV without needing to go off-road, tow 3500kg or carry a tonne – think recreational buyers.

Whether or not such a vehicle would be a hit Down Under has been debated for years now, but so far, neither Ford nor Hyundai have bothered to bring their respective offerings here.

But that doesn’t mean Toyota won’t or couldn’t take a mighty stab at it – the RAV4 and HiLux are two of the best-selling vehicles on the Australian market right now, so combining the two could make one very enticing package… especially if it’s a hybrid.
