SPY PICS: Upgraded Subaru BRZ spotted testing

Entertaining rear-drive coupe caught lapping the 'Ring with new aero aids; no news on more power for BRZ

Two weeks after a sequel for the rear-drive Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ sports coupe twins was officially confirmed, the current BRZ has been spotted testing with what looks like significant aero updates.

Snapped at the industry's favourite proving ground, the upgraded Subaru BRZ has been caught hot-lapping the Nurburgring with camouflage that hides both a redesigned front bumper and new rear fender extractors.

The bumper is thought to feature a new air-dam that stretches across the width of the car, making the BRZ capable of channelling more cooling air to both its radiator and brake rotors.

Front wing vents, meanwhile, have been added to reduce turbulent air within the wheel houses, thereby reducing lift.

Look closer and it appears Subaru has also tweaked the BRZ’s headlights, suggesting both the 86 and BRZ will either switch to full LED lighting or get updated DRL signatures.

Towards the rear of the car there's yet more evidence of wind tunnel tinkering, with the BRZ mule featuring a revised rear diffuser with new elements, flanked by dual exhaust outlets.

Both the tail-lights and bootlid have also been tweaked – with the latter receiving a larger lip for added downforce at high speed.

Beneath the bonnet there's no word on whether the Subaru-sourced 152kW/212Nm 2.0-litre boxer four-cylinder gets any more power.

It's also unclear whether the entire range will be refreshed or if Toyota and Subaru will introduce a new performance variant that will help celebrate the first-generation coupe's production drawing to an end.

Stay tuned, because all is set to be revealed at next week's Tokyo motor show.
