We’ve already seen the next-generation Volkswagen Golf R carving up the snow during winter testing, but now the all-new hot hatch has been snapped cutting hot laps at the Nurburgring.
Although the only apparent differences are sportier rims and a white roof, this test mule displays a classic, low-slung Golf R posture, large front air-intakes, rounded quad exhaust outlets and chunkier side skirts.
Oh, and an extra-large rear spoiler that we haven’t seen before either.
Originally due to make its international debut this year, the Mk8 VW Golf R’s launch could now be pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning it could now arrive in 2021 both globally and in Australia.
Still, it’ll be worth the wait and we understand Australians will still have access to the mainstream Volkswagen Golf 8 – including the new 180kW Golf GTI -- on which it’s based by the end of this year. A replacement for the upcoming motorsport-inspired Golf GTI TCR will also follow.
The 2021 Volkswagen Golf R will arrive with outputs of around 245kW of power and 420Nm (or more) of torque from its uprated EA888 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four, as well as enough pace to cover the 0-100km/h sprint in just 4.6 seconds, according to reports.
That should make it quick enough to outpace rivals like the Honda Civic Type R (228kW/400Nm) and Renault Megane RS Trophy (221kW/420Nm).
The extra performance will likely be delivered exclusively via a dual-clutch automatic transmission and without the mild-hybrid tech once rumoured for the next Golf R.
