SPY PICS: Volkswagen Golf R Estate

Captured on camera in Germany is proof the rumour of a Golf R wagon might have legs
Volkswagen is said to be sussing out the pros and cons of an R version of its current Golf Estate and these Automedia spy photos show such a car has already been cobbled up as part of the decision-making process.
The cues are clear: Big, 18-inch five-spoke matt black alloy wheels, dual oval exhausts, a new front apron complete with oversize outboard vents and a giveaway R badge on the right hand side of the grille.
The driveline is a fait accompli: A tuned version of the 2.0-litre turbo engine producing 220kW/380Nm, 4MOTION all-wheel drive and a choice between a six-speed manual gearbox, and an also six-speed DSG dual clutch auto.
Braking, roadholding and handling are already well sorted in the hatch version of the Golf R, with all-ventilated discs, lowered sports suspension, three-mode stability control and sharper steering already part of the package.
The hot Golf engine, apart from a variance in kilowatt figures, is basically the same as Audi's S3 Sportback (the local S3 produces 206kW/380Nm), which explains the explosive acceleration figures quoted for the DSG-equipped R hatch: Zero to 100km/h comes up in a claimed 4.9 seconds. The heavier wagon version will probably not be as fast, although it should hover around five seconds for the same sprint – in other words, virtually equivalent to the S3.
Word is that Volkswagen hasn't yet made a hard decision on the Golf R Estate. If it does come, it is likely to be introduced in Europe late this year or early 2015.
Let's hope the board gives it a resounding Yes...
