First there was the Benz CLS, followed by BMW's 'Concept CS' (more here) and now the Volkswagen Passat Coupe. Three low-roof cars with four-doors purporting to be 'coupes'... Something's getting lost in translation when German car makers are calling four-door hardtops 'coupes'.
Whatever you call it, the new Volksy is a good looking car, in profile at least. While testing in the USA, it was snapped by the spy photographers at Carparazzi from the luxury of a handy gopher hole.
The sculptured hipline works well in this body shape -- and cab-forward design or not, the Passat 'Coupe' strikes a pretty good ratio of front overhang to wheelbase. Based on the wheels and quad exhausts, this seems to be a high-performance model.
Given the challenge Volkswagen faced selling the previous Passat W8 4Motion in this country, Volkswagen will need to be canny with its pricing for the new 'coupe'.
Our information is the new car -- expected to be unveiled officially at next March's Geneva show -- will go on sale in Australia as a luxury-spec car alongside the overtly sporting Passat R36 (more here) .
The Passat coupe will likely share the R's 220kW V6 and 4MOTION running gear but eschews the spoilers and sports suspension of the R-car. Both models, it's expected, will be priced in mid-$50 to low-$60K area.
