Volkswagen’s fifth-generation Polo has been around since 2009, which means it’s mid-life facelift time for the compact hatchback.
Going on the accompanying images, it appears VW has adopted an ain’t-broke-don’t-fix-it philosophy as the new Polo isn’t dramatically different to the existing model.
The only real change to the front is to the bumper/spoiler assembly, which features a more aggressively profiled lower section. Similarly, it’s a case of as-you-were at the rear, which retains the neat proportions of the current model.
The current Mark 5 Polo, internally designated Typ 6R, is based on Volkswagen's PQ25 platform, although the next-gen model that arrives in a couple of years will be built around the new MQB architecture that underpins the MK7 Golf (and numerous other models over the coming years).
The Polo has been lauded both here and overseas, picking up a spate of gongs that includes the 2010 European Car of the Year trophy, staving off the Toyota iQ and Opel Astra, among other contenders.
The Polo notched up 5925 Australian sales last year, making it Volkswagen’s fourth-biggest seller behind the Golf (17,289 units), Tiguan (6871) and Amarok 4x4 (6009). It’s a far cry from 2009, when the Polo found only 1404 buyers...
