SPY PICS: Volvo’s first people-mover spotted in China

Upcoming electric MPV will be a Volvo-badged version of the Zeekr 009 packing 400kW

Volvo’s version of the Zeekr 009 has just been spied testing in China ahead of its global reveal later this quarter and its subsequent global release towards the end of this year.

Elaborately wrapped in eye-warping camouflage, the first Volvo people-mover’s relationship with the aforementioned Zeekr is nevertheless clear for all to see, with pretty much all the same key lines and proportions on display.

Equally clear from the images submitted to CarNewsChina is the fact the new Volvo EV will don a far less brash fascia design than its Chinese cousin, but there’ll be no missing that bulbous front-end, regardless of what they do to the headlights and grille.

Speaking of the lights, peeping through the camouflage is a similar daytime running light signature to the ones seen on the Volvo EX90 and EX30 SUVs, whereas the headlights are set low and wide on the vehicle’s sculpted cheeks.

The prototype is obviously a big beastie and will likely mimic the 5209mm length, 2024mm width and 1858mm height of the Zeekr 009 – give or take a few millimetres – and share the same 3205mm wheelbase – which would see it become the biggest Volvo to date.

For comparison’s sake, the Hyundai Staria is 5253mm long, 1970mm wide and 1990mm tall.

Underpinning the seven-seat Volvo MPV will be the same ‘Sustainable Experience Architecture’ as the rest of the Geely Group’s EVs, while power and torque are expected to come from either a 116kWh or 140kWh battery pack depending on the variant.

Both power packs sustain a 400kW/686Nm dual-motor powertrain in the Zeekr, yielding a claimed 0-100km/h time of 4.5 seconds.

There’s been no indication yet of the Zeekr 009 being destined for Western markets at this stage, but odds are that’s exactly where the Volvo will find the most amount of customers as it crosses swords with the Mercedes-Benz EQV.
