Volkswagen has attempted to slip a new Golf GTI variant past the focused lenses of Automedia's spy photographers by slapping the sticker of a local tuning shop on the sides.
Wiechers Sport competes in German touring car racing (DTM) and also sells roll cages, so the company's sticker on the side of this three-door GTI at the Nurburgring didn't immediately arouse suspicion – until the spy snapper noticed two Volkswagen support vehicles in convoy with the GTI.
Apparently the support crew with the car made their displeasure known once they spotted the spy photographer. But really fellas... come on, this is the Nurburgring – with more than enough cameras posted around the track to fill the entire despatch section of a Nikon factory.
Automedia's photographer observed that the GTI sits on lowered suspension and features a very large spoiler at the rear. Seats appear to have been sourced from the Golf R also, and the engine sounded "very powerful" in the words of the photographer. Automedia suggests that this car – possibly to be badged as the Golf GTI Club Sport – will make its first official appearance at the annual Wörthersee event for Golf owners this year. It's common for VW to launch its latest and greatest models at Wörthersee, so this car looks like a strong prospect for production.
Whether we'll see it here in Australia will depend on a couple of points. Since Volkswagen Australia no longer sells the GTI here in three-door form, the Club Sport would likely have to be available in five-door form – and it would have to come here at a landed cost that makes sense for the importer.
