SPY PICS: VW's compact sedan grows up
Loaded to the hilt, but losing some camo, this is the next Volkswagen JettaThe master spy photographers at Carparazzi recently snapped these images of Volkswagen's next generation Jetta, with heavy cladding still covering the front and rear of the car.
Known internally as NCS -- or New Compact Sedan -- the updated Jetta will be built on a re-engineered version of the current platform, but will be wider and longer than the current model.
Engine and transmission options will likely reflect those found in the current Mark VI Golf range, though this will vary depending on market.
Pricing, in the United States at least, will also be kept close to that of the existing model as Volkswagen continues to lure its US buyers away from Japanese rivals such as the Honda Civic, Mazda3 and Toyota Corolla.
This prototype appears to be completely production-ready and Carparazzi staff surmise that the series production car will continue to be manufactured at Volkswagen's Puebla plant in Mexico. Worldwide, the German manufacturer is aiming to sell 160,000 units annually.
It is expected the next-generation Jetta will begin production sometime in Q4 of this year with a showroom debut slated for early 2011.
