SPY PICS: W222 Mercedes S-Class Coupe and Sedan
Three-pointed star's next-gen flagship has now been spied in two-door formMercedes-Benz is in the final stages of honing its W222 S-Class, and the eagle-eyed snappers from Carparazzi have now captured a coupe derivative that will replace the existing CL.
The S-Class sedan will be launched internationally in June – in both short- and long-wheelbase formats – but the large two-door version you see here wearing the psychedelic disguise isn’t expected to appear until September’s Frankfurt motor show.
Although the camouflage conceals much of the detailing, it’s clear the big coupe’s frontal styling is influenced by the latest-gen SL with its thrusting grille and swept-back headlights.
The overall profile appears well proportioned, with a heavily tapered roofline that meets a stubbier bootlid than that worn by the soon-to-be-defunct CL.
It’s believed the two-door variant will be one of several S-Class derivatives as Mercedes seeks to plug the void left by the demise of its ultra-premium Maybach brand. Also in the pipeline is an extra-long-wheelbase Pullman model that will reportedly target the stretch-limo segment with an overall length of 6.5m.
Meanwhile, the mainstream W222 S-Class range is expected to debut a host of new technologies (as is the norm with any new generation of Merc’s flagship sedan), and among these will be ‘fully autonomous control’, billed as another step towards accident-free driving.
Also joining the safety-kit list will be active brakes with cross traffic monitoring, rear-accident injury minimisation and new lane-keeping technology that can read broken as well as solid lines.
In addition, the new S will feature a full-LED lighting package, even down to the ones used for the vanity mirrors, along with Magic Sky Control (variable-tint glass moonroof) and Magic Body Control (camera-based pre-sense damping).
The new dashboard will be a high-tech instrument panel with two wide LCD displays, one of which replaces the conventional analogue instruments while the other is a multifunctional touch screen to control climate, satnav and infotainment systems.
In terms of exterior styling, there are no great surprises as the W222 mirrors many of the styling elements that distinguish the recently facelifted E-Class.
The powertrain line-up will include a wide array of direct-injection and turbocharged engines, along with diesels and a plug-in hybrid.
Naturally, there will also be an S63 AMG with the 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 used elsewhere in the Benz line-up, but it’s believed the 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 that powers the S600 and S65 AMG may be canned in the face of ever-tighter emissions regulations.
