Two months ago, Lamborghini executives revealed the fate of the ageing Lamborghini Huracan may not be as set as most seemed to think, with (then) chief technical officer Maurizio Reggiani promising “we will see – soon – something different”.
That sparked plenty of speculation about what else Lamborghini could do with the Huracan, but now, thanks to our spy photographers in Europe, we have the answer: the Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato is moving full-steam ahead…
Originally shown as a concept back in 2019, the Sterrato is a raised and toughened-up Huracan designed to take its V10 performance onto the dirt.
The concept version was defined by its increased ride height, wider tracks, flared wheel-arches, bash plates and LED spotlights – most of which is present on the engineering development car shown here.
Pictured sliding its way around a winter test facility, the development mule is fitted with higher-profile tyres and most of the paraphernalia found on the concept, save for the bolt-on wheel-arch flares.
There’s also a set of roof rails and an aggressive-looking roof scoop we’ve only previously seen on the Lamborghini Huracan STO track monster.
Other features expected to be included on the production version of the Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato include four-wheel steering, reinforced side skirts and hybrid carbon-fibre/elastomeric resin mud guards.
Sources say the 5.2-litre V10 will develop 640 horsepower (477kW) in this application, but we expect the final figure to be closer to 470kW – matching the rest of the current Huracan family – with the ‘640’ denoting the metric horsepower (PS) figure.
While a super-limited special-edition model could emerge later down the track, the Sterrato is expected to be one of the final Huracan variants to launch globally given the entire portfolio is due for replacement in 2024.
With that timeframe in mind, we expect the Sterrato to be revealed in full around the middle of this year ahead of an international launch in the closing stages of 2022 or early 2023, leaving it a full year on the market at least.
