SsangYong Korando EV previewed

Battery-powered Korean SUV already under consideration for Australia and could arrive as soon as 2021

Two teaser images of the upcoming pure-electric SsangYong Korando have been released ahead of the battery-powered SUV's launch in 2021.

Our first glimpse of the production Korando EV, which is set to rival both the Hyundai Kona Electric and the upcoming Kia e-Niro, proves SsangYong's first EV will get a body redesigned to optimise its aerodynamics.

This includes adding a smoother front bumper, blanked-off grille and repositioned fog lights.

Beneath the skin, like the 2018 SsangYong e-SIV concept that previewed the next-gen Korando, the EV version comes equipped with a 61kWh battery pack and a single 140kW electric motor.

According to SsangYong, the Korando EV will come with a range of 'more than 418km' – but that figure is recorded on the less taxing NEDC test, suggesting a lower official range under the tougher WLTP regime.

In markets like the UK, the Korando EV is rumoured to be priced in line with its rivals, suggesting a price tag around $60,000 when it lands Down Under.

Back in 2019, SsangYong Australia confirmed the Korando was "absolutely of interest" for import here, but called on more government-backed incentives for EVs.

As well as the battery-electric version of the Korando, SsangYong has also announced it is developing a highly efficient new mild-hybrid diesel version that will be on sale by 2022.
