Ssangyong LIV-1 concept teased

Second large luxury crossover concept to emerge in as many months as Ssangyong's SUV expansion continues

Ssangyong has released two teaser images of a new full-size luxury SUV concept, dubbed the LIV-1, which will be revealed at the Seoul motor show on March 28.

The LIV-1 concept comes less than a month after the reveal of the SIV-1 concept in Geneva and adheres to the company's appealing new design language, dubbed 'Robust Aesthetics'.

No details on the large SUV concept have been divulged by the Korean car-maker, but the company implied that both the LIV-1 and SIV-1 are destined for production, citing the introduction of a "future plan for development of middle and large SUV line-up".

Since India’s Mahindra & Mahindra took over Ssangyong in early 2011, the company has been releasing concept cars on a regular basis and the LIV-1, or 'Limitless Interface Vehicle' could be a rival for a potential large luxury SUV from Kia, previewed by the Cross GT Concept at the Chicago motor show.

The LIV-1's design appears to have commonalities with the SIV-1 concept, most clearly the grille design and overall silhouette including a sloping roofline, narrow window line and sculpted rear flanks.

LED-loaded head and brake lights are in evidence, as are pumped wheel-arches, giving the vehicle a modern, sporty image.

Propulsion for the Ssangyong concept could be more potent than the company's current 2.0-litre turbo-diesel and 3.2-litre petrol mainstays - possibly using a hybrid powertrain – with the car-maker asserting the LIV-1 "expresses the unlimited high performance and the value of large premium SUV concept".

Alongside the LIV-1 and its already-revealed SIV-1 cousin, Ssangyong will also show the Chairman W Summit luxury flagship sedan at the Korean motor show, where it will host a large 2000 square-meter exhibit housing 19 vehicles. The theme, says Ssangyong, will be 'Feel my heartbeat'.

The next new Ssangyong model to lob locally will be the new Stavic people-mover that debuted in Geneva and is set for an Australian arrival in August, possibly priced from under $30K.

Ssangyong has a relatively small presence in Australia, its core vehicles being the Korando mid-size SUV and Actyon Sports ute.

Total new vehicle sales for the Korean marque in 2012 were 920 units, but the company has seen a 24.3 per cent upswing in sales for the first two months of 2013, from 210 to 261 units.
