SsangYong Rexton facelift leaked

South Korean Toyota Prado rival due here in 2021 emerges with slick new design

The unloved but capable SsangYong Rexton has been given a significant nip and tuck as part of a mid-life update.

Official images posted on Kolesa.ru show the rugged ladder-frame off-road wagon posing with a new front-end design that propels the family-sized seven-seat Toyota Prado rival into the modern era.

Sporting a larger, bolder grille flanked by quad-element LED headlight clusters, the facelifted SsangYong Rexton has a far more modern appearance.

New-look LED tail-lights adorn the rear, while the cabin includes a digital instrument cluster, new steering wheel and a variety of other detail changes.

As evidenced by the official YouTube teaser video below, there will also be the option of powered fold-out side steps, at least in some markets.

The leaked images precede the new SsangYong Rexton’s official global premiere scheduled for November.

It is expected to launch in Australia in the first half of 2021.

There is no word yet on powertrain upgrades to the current 2.2-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder (133kW/420Nm) and 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four (165kW/350Nm).

Despite offering competitive pricing from less than $40,000 drive-away, and with the backing of a seven-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty, the SsangYong Rexton has failed to score many runs in Australia this year, posting just 196 sales to the end of October.

This equates to a 0.3 per cent share of the large SUV segment.

By comparison, the category’s top seller, Toyota Prado, has managed 10,725 sales for a 17 per cent share.
