Stars come out in Paris

French motor show opens its doors to the public for 2016 – and there are plenty of goodies within

The Mondial de l'Automobile officially opens its doors today, for 2016.

Better known in the Anglosphere as the Paris motor show, the biennial event, which alternates with Germany's IAA in Frankfurt, promises a flood of new releases and important updates from the world's car manufacturers.

So far, the show is living up to its promise. Land Rover's long-awaited Discovery 5 (pictured) makes its debut in Paris, and Hyundai has some fireworks planned as well. Also in Paris, Volkswagen is presenting an antidote to its Dieselgate woes, in the form of an electric vehicle named I.D.

Lexus has the UX show car, previewing a new compact SUV, and Nissan's next Micra will be unveiled also.

Visitors to the show will see Audi's next Q5, the V8-engined/rear-drive Ferrari GT4Lusso T, Citroen's C3 WRC concept, a cross-over E-Class wagon from Mercedes-Benz and Alfa Romeo's AWD Giulia Veloce Q4 – a car to rival the Subaru WRX STI.

In short, there threatens to be plenty of wow factor and eye candy on display – and less of the focus on sustainability that has dulled the spectacle of previous years.
