Subaru has taken the wraps off the new ultra-high performance 'Spec C' Impreza WRX STI in Japan.
But before you rejoice, the hardcore WRX STI Spec C is not destined for Australian showrooms. Not via official channels at least...
David Rowley, Subaru Australia's National Corporate Affairs Manager, told the Carsales Network that: "Currently [there are] no plans for the Oz market." Nevertheless, the lighter, more powerful STI makes for interesting reading.
Based on the WRX STI, the Spec C model takes the idea of AWD performance to the next level with various powertrain and chassis tweaks, not to mention a lighter body.
Only 900 versions of the WRX STI Spec C will be built, ensuring its rarity.
According to Subaru, the new model will offer "sheer excitement and unique driving sensations" which are delivered via an increase in torque and power when compared to the Australia specification STI.
With an rejigged turbocharger featuring new ball bearings for the turbine axle bearing, plus tweaks to the ECU, power from the 2.0-litre boxer engine rises to 227kW at 6400rpm and 422Nm at 4400rpm (compared to Australian STI's with 221kW and 407Nm).
Matching the power hike is an uprated chassis, including reinforced cross members in the front suspension for more direct steering, stiffer spring and damping rates for less body roll and improved control, plus a changed rear LSD to ensure optimum rear traction during full throttle cornering.
New Bridgestone Potenza RE070 (245/40R18) are added and Subaru has also increased the oil flow volume in the power steering system to suit extended punishment, such as on the race track.
Various weight saving features make it into the C Spec model as well, such as an aluminum engine hood, light alloy wheels, a smaller battery and laminar window glasses.
