Straight petrol six for 22MY Range Rover Sport

Yet another update for Rangie Sport, this time bringing inline-six turbo-petrol power

Fresh from releasing its updated 21MY Range Rover Sport with a new straight-six turbo-diesel to replace the TDV8, Land Rover has now announced a 22MY Rangie Sport line-up complete with inline-six turbo-petrol power for the first time.

The 22MY update, first Australian deliveries of which are due here in July, is expected to be the final upgrade for the popular large British luxury SUV before the L494’s replacement is launched in 2022.

Like Jaguar Land Rover’s new all-aluminium Ingenium turbo-diesel six, the 3.0-litre inline turbo-petrol six-cylinder is equipped with 48-volt Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) technology to boost torque and reduce CO2 emissions.

The new P400 powertrain, available with both SE ($128,206 plus on-road costs) and HSE ($144,906 plus ORCs) equipment grades, produces 294kW of power and 550Nm of torque over 2000-5000rpm, enabling the Rangie Sport to hit 100km/h in 5.9 seconds while consuming 8.7L/100km and emitting 236g/km.

Already seen here in the new Land Rover Defender 110, it combines an electric motor, 48V battery, twin-scroll turbocharger, continuous variable valve lift and a 7kW electric supercharger that’s able to spool up to 65,000rpm in just 0.5sec. JLR says that virtually eliminates turbo lag and allows energy to be harvested and stored while the vehicle decelerates.

The axing of the entry-level P300 SE (previously $106,113 plus ORCs) and all 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engines except the P400e plug-in hybrid for 22MY will see Range Rover Sport prices start from $115,506 for the D250 SE (previously $113,485).

Opening 22MY Rangie Sport diesel range, which is now powered exclusively by the Ingenium 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder MHEV turbo-diesel, the D250 develops 183kW/600Nm, while the D300 makes 221kW/650Nm and the D350 offers 258kW/700Nm.

While the four-cylinder petrol-powered P400e PHEV makes 297kW/640Nm, the petrol engine line-up continues to be topped by JLR’s venerable 5.0-litre supercharged V8, in both 386kW/625Nm P525 and 423kW/700Nm P575 (SVR) form.

How much does the 22MY Range Rover Sport P400 cost?
SE – $128,206
HSE – $144,90
*Prices exclude on-road costs
