Stretched luxo Aston Martin DBX in the works

This will be the third derivative of the British car-maker’s inaugural SUV, following the wagon already on sale and a sleek SUV-coupe that was recently teased and which Aston Martin boss Tobias Moers has now confirmed will debut in the final quarter of this year.
In a roundtable interview with journalists, Moers also then revealed that yet another take on the DBX was on the agenda.
“We’re exploring with the DBX platform and there’s potential to move on in the more luxurious business with it, especially in China,” he said.
Instead of entering existing segments, the key to success if you’re a small car-maker like Aston is to always be a bit different, Moers said.
“If you have your own platform you can create super, super luxurious products,” he said.
“You can create a longer wheelbase, things like that.”
A larger take on the DBX will finally provide the expansive interior room the Aston SUV needs to challenge its ultra-luxurious rivals by offering airline fold-flat seating and extra space for yet more lucrative accessories, like tailored hunting or fishing cabinets.
It’s not known if Aston plans to simply stretch the DBX or completely restyle and rename its flagship SUV, but Moers said that during his reign he plans to fully exploit the DBX’s potential.
“This is why Aston Martin is unbelievably strong,” he said.
“Aston Martin is very efficient to have been able to create a new platform, this is why the DBX is one of the best-handling SUVs you can find on the marketplace.
“It was worthwhile to create that new platform and we’ll use that platform now to increase our portfolio. For some of our main competitors, life is too easy at the moment.”
Already powered by a Mercedes-AMG 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, it’s thought that in the near future the DBX will also receive AMG’s P3 plug-in hybrid technology that will substantially increase performance while slashing emissions.
