Subaru Liberty bows out with a bang

Swansong Final Edition to mark the end of the line for long-running mid-sizer

Just 31 examples of the 2020 Subaru Liberty Final Edition will mark the departure of the popular Japanese mid-size sedan after 31 years of service in Australia.

The Final Edition is claimed to offer $6400 worth of extra standard equipment over the Subaru Liberty 2.5i Premium on which it’s based, for an extra $1990 at $39,930 plus on-road costs.

Outside, these include body colour-specific 18-inch STI alloy wheels, STI front and rear lip spoilers, mesh front grille and black exterior highlights (fog light surround, side skirt garnish, door mirror covers and rear badging).

Inside, there’s a numbered Final Edition interior badge, Harman Kardon speakers, subwoofer and amplifier, Ultrasuede inserts for the seats and interior trim, blue stitching for the seats, armrests and dash, a black-stitched steering wheel and black interior highlights (air-vents, dash, door trim, steering wheel).

Adding further exclusivity, the Subaru Liberty Final Edition is only available in three colours – each with a different alloy wheel finish – including Magnetite Grey with black wheels (15 cars), Crystal Black with silver wheels (10 cars) and Crystal White with gunmetal wheels (six cars).

Subaru Australia announced the axing of the Liberty in September after more than three decades on the market here, due to sliding sales amid the shift towards SUVs and crossover wagons including the Japanese brand’s own Outback.

“We wanted to mark the end of Liberty’s distinguished history with the brand in a truly exclusive way and these individually numbered vehicles are a tribute to what it has contributed to Subaru over more than three decades,” said Subaru Australia general manager, Blair Read.

So long Subaru Liberty...

Full details of the Liberty 2.5i Final Edition can be viewed here, where you can reserve your car on a first-come first-served basis, and limited stocks of other Liberty vehicles are expected to be exhausted by early 2021.

Subaru has sold more than 153,000 Liberty vehicles in Australia since 1989, but the new model released overseas last year won’t be sold here.

Instead, Subaru Australia will launch the new-generation Outback and Levorg in 2021, followed by the new BRZ, WRX, WRX STI, Forester and an EV.
