Subaru makes it official

Diesel boxer slated for Geneva in March

Subaru has revealed important specifications for its new horizontally opposed diesel engine, not quite a month ahead of the new powerplant's preview at the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland.

The new engine, as we reported already (more here), will debut in the Euro-spec Legacy (our Liberty) and Outback models.

Built with an aluminium block, the diesel 'Boxer' is both lightweight and strong, according to Subaru. By virtue of the opposing pistons, Subaru claims that the diesel is fundamentally quieter and more refined than inline or V-configuration diesels.

Displacing 2.0 litres, the engine features DOHC heads, a variable-geometry turbocharger and common-rail induction. Maximum power of 110kW occurs at 3600rpm and peak torque is 350Nm, arriving at 1800rpm. In the Legacy sedan, the engine emits 148g/km.

As well as the diesel models -- which introduce electrically-assisted steering to the Legacy and Outback models, for the petrol variants also -- Subaru will unveil the new Forester at the show.
