Subaru has released a club-racer version of its BRZ – dubbed the RA Racing – but the bad news is that it’s destined solely for the Japanese domestic market.
The best part (if you happen to live in Japan) is the price, as the limited-edition model retails for just ¥2,731,429 (around $28,650) in our money, representing a premium of only ¥31,500 ($330) over the standard BRZ.
Although the donor car’s 147kW/205Nm 2.0-litre boxer engine and suspension are reportedly left untouched, the RA Racing does score a raft of performance upgrades that include a Torsen limited-slip differential, high-performance brakes, removable tow hooks and an improved cooling system.
Externally, the RA Racing can be distinguished from standard BRZs via its black door-handles and 16-inch steel wheels. There is also a pair of ducts nestled under the front bumper – these are to channel air to cool the front brakes.
Befitting its track-day orientation, the bespoke BRZ comes equipped with a four-point race harness, six-point roll cage and custom-fit floor mats. It also loses the passenger sun visor (although the negligible weight saving this is likely to bring makes one wonder whether this was really necessary).
That’s about all we know for now. If you’re a purist, you’ll probably like the simplicity and minimalism that’s apparently a hallmark of the RA Racing. What a shame we’ll never have the chance to sample it on our shores…
