Subaru teases two new STI concepts

WRX STI hatch primed for a return, hopefully for more than just Japan

The News

Two new STI concept cars will debut at the Japan Mobility Show later this month, one of which will feature a battery-electric powertrain, and the other an “internal combustion engine base”.

The Key Details

  • Two new STI concepts to debut in Tokyo: one BEV, one ICE
  • ICE-based model teased with a hatch body – WRX STI hatch to return?
  • No market intentions or other details revealed
  • E-Outback, Forester Wilderness, Outback Wilderness to make Japanese debuts

The Finer Details

There are next to no concrete details available as to either vehicle, only that the Performance-E STI concept will be electric and the Performance-B STI concept internal combustion.

Thankfully the respective teaser images shed some more light: the former appears to be a low-slung crossover while the latter is quite clearly a WRX-based hatchback.

“The design achieves a balance of advanced performance and power with practicality,” Subaru said of the Performance-B STI; a clear reference to the third-generation WRX STI’s two-body range.

“This model expands the range of options that deliver the Subaru difference, offering more customers the chance to experience the joy of driving.”

The Road Ahead

As for the Performance-E STI, Subaru has been promising an STI-spec EV for years now with the Solterra medium SUV likely the first cab off the rank, however it’s also possible the new Toyota-sourced Uncharted could surface first since it’s more in line with the brand’s compact performance roots.

Either way, we don’t have too long to wait since the Japan Mobility Show opens on October 29.

Other vehicles on display will include the E-Outback, Forester Wilderness, Outback Wilderness and Travis Pastrana’s 1983 Subaru GL Family Huckster.
