Subaru WRX and BRZ to lift their sub-standard safety game

Manual versions of Subaru’s popular sports cars set to receive an important safety update

Subaru Australia is set to integrate important safety technology currently missing from manual versions of the latest fifth-generation Subaru WRX and second-generation BRZ, in what it describes as an important commitment to manual buyers.

The new Subaru WRX sports sedan launched this year has held a significant safety caveat since its introduction, with only automatic variants receiving the full gamut of Subaru’s Eyesight safety technology: in effect meaning manual variants miss out on automated emergency braking (AEB).

Similarly, the six-speed manual version of the new BRZ sports coupe has also missed out on AEB and other advanced driver-assist systems that preclude it from a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating.

Speaking to press in Sydney recently, Subaru Australia managing director Blair Read said the car-maker was working on addressing the sub-par safety situation for both high-profile models.

The move would likely ensure the BRZ and WRX can carry a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating in Australia.

“We’re committed to having manual,” said Read.

“Will [those models] get AEB? We’re working towards it coming to Australia. Our thinking is to equip those models – we are committed to manual buyers.”

Read wouldn’t put a timeline on the fitment of AEB in manual versions of the WRX or BRZ.

Despite the lack of the important safety system in manual versions, the second-generation BRZ has been an out-and-out success for Subaru since its launch in January, outselling its new twin-under-the-skin, the Toyota GR 86, five-to-one.

Read said the new BRZ’s popularity comes down to timing, but also a loyal buyer base for the Subaru sports car.

“The BRZ is a great car,” he said.

“We obviously got to market earlier so numbers are little misleading to look at. There’s a loyal buying base for the BRZ and there’s a really loyal buying base for GR and 86. I think it’s great there’s some rivalry in market.

“There are styling and engineering differences in the car. With the BRZ, the handling and drive experience is really Subaru and it’s suitable for a variety of conditions. Maybe that appeals to a certain type of buyer.”
