Every year tens of thousands of petrol-heads religiously make the pilgrimage to Canberra to experience Summernats -- an event most politely described as a blast from the past -- and the next instalment in early 2019 will attempt to shatter a world record.
The world's largest simultaneous car-tyre burnout Guinness World Record is currently held by Saudi Arabia, another country known for its love of gas-guzzling cars, which snaffled the legendary record in 2017 at the Saudi National Day activities, or Saudinats as one wag put it.
Back 2015 Australia set the burnout record at Summernats with 103 vehicles simultaneously trashing tyres, then the Saudis trumped it with 119 cars all ripping shreds together last year.
Come 2019, Australia is poised to retake the crown.
On Friday, January 4, as part of Summernats 32, 120 cars will take a tilt at the burnout world record.
Guinness World Record Officials will be on site to observe that all rules are met and you can bet that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman will be on the edge of his throne as a 100,000 inebriated Aussies cheer on the 120 heroes.
Summernats 32 takes place over January 3-6, 2019 and as well as the Guinness World Record attempt for the largest simultaneous car-tyre burnout, there will also be loads of car exhibits, horsepower heroes, live music from 360 and Butterfingers, plus more than 2500 Aussie muscle cars – and regular burnout competitions too.
The event takes place at Exhibition Park in Canberra and will ring in the New Year to the smell of high-octane fuel and burnt rubber.
Organisers are expecting crowds of around 100,000 people and tickets start from $45, but Philips Automotive Australia is offering two platinum tickets to anyone who can string a few words together.
Together with return airfares and two nights’ accommodation, the platinum tickets provide 'best seat in the house' grandstand positions, entry to the 'Platinum Precinct' and access to the shaded burnout grandstand.
All you have to do is buy something from Philips and then in 25 words or less explain why you should go to the event, at the Philips Automotive Australia Facebook page.
Check out the Summernats official website for more details on what could be a record-breaking event.
