Sun smiles on Shannons summer sale

Large crowd brings "one of the best regional auction outcomes of the year" in Melbourne

The sun was shining at the November 23 Shannons Melbourne summer sale, as a collection of classic cars and black and white numerical number plates went under the hammer to deliver what was described as "one of the best regional auction outcomes for the year."

While the star vehicle of the show was a 1977 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.0 that brought $74,000, the highest item result was $82,000 for the number plate "345."

Next highest was $82,000 for "309", while "899" brought no less than $77,000. "88.000" sold for $21,000.

After the Porsche, the second highest vehicle auction price was a 1973 Jaguar V12 E-Type from the USA that went for $67,000.

Interesting vehicles included an original Australian-built 1965 Ford Galaxie (pictured) showing only 18,000 miles that brought $31,000 and a 1973 Holden Monaro GTS 5.0-litre V8 that sold for $33,000.

Post-war cars included a right hand drive 1948 Packard Series 22 sedan sold for $25,000 and a restored "low light" 1949 Morris Minor that brought $9,500. Pre-war sales included a 1934 Nash 1220 sedan sold for $30,000, a 1930 Essex Super 6 sedan sold for $12,500, and a 1924 Dodge Tourer ready for restoration that sold for $9,250.

20 vehicles sold with no reserve included a 1969 HK Holden Kingswood 307 V8 (pictured) that brought $17,000 and a 1970 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow sold for $12,500.

According to Shannons National Auction Manager Christophe Boribon "We had a crowd of nearly 600 people in attendance and there were many keen bidders, with a number of vehicles exceeding their estimates, There was a feeling of renewed confidence in the room," he said.
