Supercar capital of the world: London

You might be surprised to hear that supercar reviews on this website don't always attract as many eyeballs as everyday runabouts like the Toyota Corolla.

But on Instagram it’s a different story and, according to a new study based on the number of cities tagged in supercar mentions, London is the winner.

As the (soon to be former) financial capital of Europe, London has always been an affluent city and, naturally, it’s home to high number of Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche and McLaren owners.

Activity Superstore, a British experience retailer not unlike Red Balloon here in Oz, recently collated Instagram data from the last three years and found that of 148 million images of supercars shared in that time, the highest percentage were tagged in London, with more than six million mentions.

Moscow came second with 5.9 million, followed by Los Angeles in third with four million, followed by New York and Dubai on around 3.7 million apiece.

No Australian cities made the top 20 list and, interestingly, only one Italian city made the list -- Milan in 16th place -- despite the vast majority of photos being Italian stallions from Lamborghini and Ferrari. Go figure.

Paris, Monaco, Abu Dhabi and Miami made the list, while cities such as Istanbul and Fort Lauderdale in Florida also featured.

In terms of which supercars were snapped the most -- sometimes by owners, more often by admirers -- Ferrari features the most with almost 52 million posts.

Second was Lamborghini with 48 million, followed by Porsche with 43 million. Fourth position went to McLaren, with a distant 17 million.

According to Matt Davis, spokesperson for Activity Superstore, we're existing "…in an era of supercar showmanship where millionaires (and billionaires) use their exotic automotive finery to wow an audience of admirers.

"There may be many dedicated enthusiasts out there but almost everyone can appreciate a beautifully crafted supercar when they see one. For this reason, we decided to map out where the supercar capitals are so people know where to go if they want to spot one."
