Australians love racing and love collecting. So when the two worlds come together on the 2020 Bathurst 1000 weekend, we take notice.
The first Australian Touring Car Championship was held at Gnoo Blas, NSW and the single-race title was won by David McKay driving a Jaguar Mark 1.
Since then, ATCC and Supercars have gone on to become the lifeblood of Australia’s motor racing heart.
In celebration of 60 years of Australian racing royalty, the Royal Australian Mint has released a new collection celebrating the cars and drivers who etched their names into the history books.
Apart from being on a stamp, and being crowned King of the Mountain, is there any higher honour in this country than to be put on a coin?
The 2020 collection sees iconic race winners and their cars immortalised into 50c coloured uncirculated coins.
Racing royalty such as Jim Richards, Dick Johnson and Craig Lowndes wins are celebrated as well as these winning cars - 1970 Holden Monaro, 1971 Chevrolet Camaro, 1983 Mazda RX-7, 1984 Ford XE Falcon, 1991 Nissan Skyline, 1998 Holden VS Commodore, 2000 Holden VT Commodore and 2008 Ford BF Falcon. There is also a special Supercars collection coin featuring a Jaguar Mark 1.
Released on this 2020 Bathurst 1000 weekend, you will be able to purchase your favourite racing heroes individually for $15 from the eight coins available or a full nine coin collection which features a limited edition Supercars coin for $145.
