SUV joins Lexus hybrid line-up

Lexus' hybrid RX400h four-wheel drive will be available in Australian showrooms in September.

The RX400h features Toyota's hybrid synergy drive system which combines the RX400h's 3.3-litre V6 petrol engine with high-torque electric drive motor-generators driving front and rear wheels. Based on the same principles as the Toyota Prius, the RX400h's drive system uses a separate generator, fed by either the petrol engine or braking to recharges the batteries as required.

Available in the right-hand drive UK market for over a year, Lexus Australia is nonetheless pleased the RX400h will be available so soon after the local launch of the hybrid GS450h, which was released in May. "To introduce a second hybrid vehicle in 2006 is an exciting result for us," said Lexus Australia divisional manager Scott Grant.

"RX400h gives drivers the opportunity to experience all the luxury benefits of a Lexus four-wheel drive without placing undue strain on the environment," said Grant.

According to Lexus, the RX400h has been rated as an SULEV (Super Low Emissions Vehicle) in the USA, however, early reports from the UK suggest RX400h's CO2 emissions don't qualify it for a reduction in vehicle excise duty.

The Australian Green Vehicle Guide has yet to release its rating for the RX400h but recently gave the Lexus GS450h four-and-a-half stars.

Lexus Australia will announce pricing closer to launch but expect it to start around $90k.
