Suzuki Celerio hit with brake scare

Pint-size Suzuki Celerio recalled in UK over brake failures before it arrives here

Suzuki has been hit with a major safety recall after two of its Celerio city-cars suffered total brake failures during performance testing by a British car magazine.

The potentially fatal flaw has seen Suzuki suspend all sales of the Celerio in the UK and Ireland and issue a full safety recall.

The Celerio was due to replace the Alto in Australia next month, but it's not yet known if the problem will delay the car's local launch.

The safety recall concerns all right-hand markets, but is not thought to affect left-hand drive models.

Suzuki has also advised all customers of the Alto-replacing Celerio to stop driving their car until a fix is found.

The cause, currently being investigated by a team of Suzuki engineers, is so far unknown but happened during high-speed braking.

The failures occurred at a private test facility while a journalist working for Autocar magazine was behind the wheel. After some inital light-braking applications the journalist reported a complete lack of stopping power after hitting the brakes at 130km/h. Without brakes he was forced to resort to using both the handbrake and engine braking to slow the car.

A second car then suffered identical brake failure in the same test conditions prompting the big safety recall.
