Suzuki R3 concept

Suzuki's Indian subsidiary is forging ahead with new models for the sub-continent, creating this new compact MPV with seating for six

Suzuki's Indian subsidiary, Maruti Suzuki, took the wraps off its R3 concept at the New Delhi motor show in India, a family friendly compact six seater vehicle.

Taking just nine-months to develop in-house at Suzuki Maruti's Indian R&D centre, the R3 concept features barn-style doors making ingress and egress easier for front and middle row passengers.

Designed specifically for the Indian market, Suzuki Maruti issued a media statement commenting on the evolving marketplace, saying "The Indian market is changing rapidly and consumer lifestyles evolving fast. To cater to one such market need, Maruti Suzuki has developed a concept car, R3."

The compact MPV could make it into production in India in the mid-term future if it's well received at the show, and with Maruti Suzuki being the biggest player in the Indian market with a market share of close to 50 per cent it has the scope to deliver brand new models such as the R3.

With a growing number of manufacturers choosing to show concept cars and new models alike at the Auto Expo in New Delhi, it signifies India's increasing importance as an emerging (and profitable) market.
