Suzuki Swift Sport bound for Oz

The latest iteration of the swifter Suzuki Swift is set to arrive in Australia from late February

Suzuki will launch the latest iteration of its popular Swift Sport in Australia next year.

The highly specified model boasts Suzuki’s new, Euro 5 compliant M16A engine, which develops a total output of 100kW/160Nm thanks primarily to a revised variable valve timing system. Exhaust emissions are reduced by 10 per cent from the previous model's, now 147g/km, while fuel consumption is improved to 5.3L/100km (average) on the NEDC combined cycle.

Acceleration times are said to see Swift Sport go from standstill to 100km/h in just 8.7 seconds, while v.max is claimed at 194.7km/h.

With a six-speed manual transmission as standard, Swift Sport gains triple-cone synchromesh on first and second gears to permit lower shift effort while a larger counterweight at the transmission end of the gear stick offers what Suzuki says is a “sporty shift action that is now lighter and more positive”.

Pleasingly, the Swift Sport will also receive a “sportier” exhaust note.

Swift Sport’s wide front and rear track and a short wheelbase combine with greater toe control and camber rigidity from the (rear) torsion beam, which also receives stiffer bushings. Larger diameter rear wheel bearings are also said to help stabilise the rear end under “hard cornering”. Front spring rates are also increased while the struts now include additional rebound springs to further enhance stability and grip.

The steering, brakes, suspension frame and front wheel bearings have also been upgraded, with more details set to follow closer to the car’s launch.

Specification upgrades include HID projector-style headlamps, push-button starter, climate control, front foglamps, cruise control and Bluetooth connectivity.

Stability control and seven airbags are offered as standard equipment.

Since May 2005 the Suzuki Swift has sold more than 2.2 million examples in 40 countries across the globe.

Local pricing and specification will be announced closer to the car’s local debut in late February, 2012.
