Suzuki's new baby SUV
Suzuki's model rollout continues with an all-new contender designed to fill the niche between the Swift and Grand Vitara.Dubbed SX4 and billed as a passenger car-cum-SUV, the newcomer is slightly shorter than a Toyota Corolla, but wider and taller.
The tallboy hatch will initially be built in Hungary - in conjunction with Fiat - with Japanese production ramping up soon after. A Suzuki Australia source suggested the car would land here in mid-2006, with a starting price around $20K.
Two versions will be offered in Europe: the 'Urban Line' is relatively conventional in appearance and mechanical layout, but the 'Outdoor Line' has pseudo-off-road aspirations - it comes with a three-mode AWD system that includes a '4WD Lock' setting.
There's a choice of three engines in Euro-spec SX4s: an entry-level 73kW 1.5-litre unit, a 79kW 1.6-litre and a Fiat-sourced 88kW 1.9-litre turbo diesel. The latter is offered with a new six-speed manual transmission.
Suzuki boasts the SX4 is the only car in its class that features the combination of diesel, six-speed manual and 4x4. ABS with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) is standard on all Euro-spec models, while an electronic stability program is available on selected models.
Australian spec levels will be announced closer to the launch date.
