Targa Wrest Point dry run
Over a hundred entrants have gathered to pit themselves against the clock in this weekend's Targa Wrest Point tarmac rallyTarmac rallying is enjoying continuing popularity in this country. The original event that kicked things off in Australia is the Targa Tasmania, which is now joined by Targa Wrest Point.
A new event for 2009, the Targa Wrest Point has already secured a field of over 115 competitive cars -- either modern or classic. Organisers have set up a route comprising 14 competitive stages, covering 177km. Micro-management of the event falls to the 600 officials who have offered their services on behalf of sponsors, local government and the event's organising team.
"Our team have got the event off the ground in less than six months, at a time of economic uncertainty, and when many other tarmac rallies are being cancelled," said event director, Mark Perry.
Undoubtedly treating the event as a precursor for Targa Tasmania, famous racing and rally driver, Jim Richards, will pair up with long-standing co-driver, Barry Oliver, to contest Targa Wrest Point. Richards and Oliver will be running in a Porsche 911 GT2.
Tasmanian entrants, Jason and John White, will be take part, driving a Lamborghini Gallard Superleggera. Other competitors to follow are Tony Quinn in Nissan GTR and ex-works Subaru rally pilot Dean Herridge in a WRX STi.
Across the five categories (Modern, Early Modern, Early Classic, Late Classic, and Showroom), there'll be competing cars as diverse as a Porsche 968, a Holden HQ Monaro, a Datsun 2000 Sports, a Ford Mustang and a De Tomaso Pantera. Mixed in with those, there'll be a brace of Evo Lancers and Porsches.
The event sets off from Hobart's Wrest Point tomorrow at 9.00 am.
