Targa Wrest Point rally ready to fire
Third round of CAMS tarmac rally series boasts close to a hundred modern and classic carsThe penultimate round of the CAMS Australian Targa Championship rally series kicks off today, with the start of the Targa Wrest Point event in Tasmania's Huon Valley environs.
According to the organisers, a field almost a hundred strong will line up to take part. Among the mix of modern and classic cars is the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera of Jason and John White, back to defend their win in the event last year. Targa Wrest Point is likely to be critical for the Whites, who won the Supaloc Targa Adelaide back in August, but retired with a differential problem in the second round of the series – Targa High Country, held in Victoria during November. This leaves the Lambo crew trailing Tony Quinn and Naomi Tillett in their Nissan GTR. A top six finish will bring the Whites back into contention in time for the final round of the series, Targa Tasmania in April.
Targa Wrest Point, now in its fourth year, is open to cars competing in nine different classes: Modern competition, Regularity, Early Classic Handicap, Late Classic Handicap, Classic Outright, Early Modern, Showroom, 4WD Showroom and Showroom Sports.
Perennial favourites, Jim Richards and Barry Oliver, will be returning to the event in a Porsche 911 GT2 RS and the Audi TT RS of Matt and Casey Close promises fierce rivalry, fresh from a second place in Victoria.
Other highlights will be the V8-powered Ford Capri Perana of Donn Todd and Dean Tighe, pitted against the 1972 Datsun 240Z of Michael Cardinaels and Jason Page, and the Showroom Sports contest shaping up between Targa Adelaide winner Neil Ford in a 2007 Corvette Z06 and the team of Craig Dean and Emma Quigley, victorious in Targa High Country, driving a 2012 Mustang Shelby GT500.
Running over a 588km distance in total, to the south of Hobart, the event features 208km of competitive stages.
