Tata teases Evoque-based Harrier SUV
Indian brand cashes in on parent company's JLR ownership with new model that will benefit from Land Rover tech and architectureTata Motors has teased a new SUV that it predicts will become its best-selling global model.
The model teased, called the Harrier, is said to be heavily inspired by the H5X concept that made its debut at this year's Geneva motor show.
Set to go on sale in early 2019, Tata says its small SUV will offer best-in-class quality, space and connectivity.
Beneath the skin, the Harrier will sit on an evolution of Land Rover's D8 platform that has been adapted for rough road conditions.
Currently, the D8 architecture is used for the current Evoque, Land Rover Discovery Sport and the Jaguar E-PACE.
Like the Disco Sport, the Harrier will be offered with five seats as standard, with the option of an additional row of seats.
Beneath the bonnet, despite the JLR connection, the all-wheel drive SUV will miss out on the British group's Ingenium powertrains and source its 105kW/320Nm 2.0-litre diesel engine from Fiat Chrysler. It will be combined with a six-speed manual.
A petrol version is yet to be confirmed.
Currently the Indian car-maker only offers its Xenon ute to Australian buyers. It's not yet known if the Harrier could join Tata's ute model range Down Under.
