Rolls-Royce has issued another teaser image of its upcoming Wraith Coupe – which debuts on March 5 at the Geneva motor show – and made a tongue-in-cheek statement about how much grunt the big two-door will have. To quote from the brief press release: “And so to the question of Power. In times gone by, when asked the question, Rolls-Royce would simply reply, ‘Adequate, Sir’. However, for Wraith we feel it right to be a touch more explicit: ‘More than ample.’”
Among the other promises made by Rolls-Royce of its new model is that it will be the fastest and most dynamic vehicle in the company’s 108-year history.
Rolls boss Torsten Müller-Ötvös was recently quoted as saying: “Expect the boldest design, the most dramatic performance and the most powerful Rolls-Royce that has ever played host to the famous Spirit of Ecstasy figurine.”
Although just speculation at this point, it’s believed the Wraith will be propelled by an uprated version of the 6.6-litre twin-turbo V12 that powers the Ghost.
Reports suggest peak power will be bumped up from 420kW to just under 450kW, and it’s believed the torque quota will also be significantly enhanced.
To offset its added poke, the Wraith is believed to receive a host of suspension mods to deliver a more sporting drive than that served up by the stately Ghost.
The Wraith is expected to measure about 5.2m in length, while its wheelbase is tipped to be around 180mm shorter than that of the Ghost. And although more sprightly than Rolls-Royce’s other offerings, it’ll still be no lightweight at around 2300kg.
As for the Wraith moniker, it last featured on a Roller way back in 1938 and, according to Müller-Ötvös, it “alludes to an almost imperceptible but powerful force, something rare, agile and potent, a spirit that will not be tethered to the earth.”
All very flowery and evocative, but of more real-world relevance is that the car is expected to go on sale in Europe in the last quarter of this year, with UK pricing expected to start around £220,000.
This converts to just over $330k in our money, but you’d need to more or less double this figure to arrive at the anticipated Australian price when it lands here.
