Tesla celebrates millionth car

US car-maker says a red Tesla Model Y is the millionth car it has made

Tesla is celebrating a production milestone following its millionth car rolled off the production line in Fremont, California.

Posting a picture of car number one million, a red Model Y SUV, Tesla's CEO Elon Musk congratulated the factory workers.

Founded back in 2003, Tesla expects to rack up the next million cars rapidly following a second car plant's completion in Shanghai in China.

The Chinese factory is claimed capable of building 150,000 vehicles this year while the Fremont plant is said to be able to assemble up to 500,000 cars annually when at maximum capacity.

Helping it ramp up production is news the current Model 3, Model S, Model X and Model Y will be joined by the new Roadster replacement, Cybertruck and larger Semi truck.

In 2021, the pure-electric car-maker will open its all-new European production hub in Berlin, Germany, that will feature a dedicated production line for the Tesla Model Y – the small SUV that's set to be its best-selling model.
