Tesla Model 3 now priced below $60,000

As other brands are raising prices, Australia’s biggest-selling EV is more affordable than ever

The 2021 Tesla Model 3 is now priced from $59,900 plus on-road costs in Australia after the US brand again lowered the entry point to the popular EV via its online configurator last weekend.

As other car-makers are raising prices and are hamstrung by supply, Tesla, which has not made clear why its vehicles are heading in the opposite direction, is setting the Model 3 up for a record sales year that according to local delivery tracker VedaPrime should push well past 10,000 units.

According to VedaPrime, this could be partly due to the fact that the Tesla Model 3 is now being produced at the car-maker’s factory in Shanghai, China.

The sub-$60K entry point marks a $13,000 decrease in Model 3 pricing from its highest marker just 12 months ago.

Meanwhile, the mid-tier Tesla Model 3 Long Range now starts at $74,300 plus ORCs and the flagship Tesla Model 3 Performance is $84,900 plus ORCs.

Those prices represents savings of up to $17,000 from the RRP set 12 months ago.

The price reductions come as Tesla embarks on a landmark year for new vehicle sales in Australia, even with the deliveries of the Tesla Model S and Tesla Model X delayed until late 2022.

A spokesperson from VedaPrime told carsales that roughly 7500 Model 3s have arrived in Australia so far this year, although not all of those have been delivered to owners.

Tesla does not disclose its figures through the official VFACTS industry reporting service, but it’s known that last year the car-maker shipped 2949 vehicles to Australia, more than 2600 of which were examples of the Tesla Model 3.

“I’m expecting Tesla Model 3 sales to easily pass 10,000 this year, maybe even 13,000 or 15,000,” the VedaPrime spokesperson said.

“This year has been massive with shipments – and it compares with about 3000 sales of Model 3 last year.”

The spokesperson said another three shipments with 1200 Model 3s onboard were bound for Australia this quarter, which would theoretically take accumulative deliveries for 2021 to more than 11,000.

Citing his own sources, the spokesperson said all Model 3s were built in June at the Shanghai plant.

The timing of the next shipments of Model 3s is impeccable, with NSW set to join the ACT in abolishing stamp duty on electric vehicles priced below $78,000 in September.

Additionally, buyers of the first 25,000 EVs priced below $68,750 will receive a $3000 discount.

How much does the 2021 Tesla Model 3 cost?
Standard Range Plus – $59,900
Long Range – $74,300
Performance – $84,900

* Prices exclude on-road costs
