Tesla’s Model S will compete in a new race series specifically created for electric vehicles, according to new reports.
The new race series, called the Electric GT World Series, has been created for any car-maker to compete but because of a lack of availability of any other pure-electric vehicles to take part, all 10 race teams that plan to compete will enter modified Model S vehicles.
Choosing the Model S P85+, rather than the all-wheel P90D, the less powerful Tesla was chosen because the 85kWh battery pack-powered car is claimed to be more suited to racing because of its rear-wheel drive.
Speaking to electric car blog, Transportevolved.com, Electric GT World Series founder, Augustin Paya, said the Model S was chosen by teams because the big Tesla was “one of the best cars ever made”.
Paya also claims the Model S will be able to race for longer than the 20—25 minutes single-seat Formula E racers currently compete for, before needing to change cars.
To prepare for the race series, that is yet to receive official FIA support, the race teams are allowed to strip weight, add race-spec brakes and suspension and add an aggressive new aero pack that also aids brake cooling.
The first race is planned to take part some time in 2017.
