Tesla Model Y on track to be world’s fifth best-selling car

New electric SUV to outsell cars like Toyota Camry as US EV brand hunts down Japanese giant for global top spot

Tesla is on track to sell almost 800,000 examples of the Tesla Model Y in 2022 after finding almost half a million new homes for the all-new mid-size electric SUV in the first three quarters of this year.

According to market analyst BloombergNEF, Tesla delivered around 200,000 Model Ys in the third quarter alone and that by the end of this year's it will have sold almost 800,000 – enough to see the US brand earn a spot in the list of the world’s top five best-selling vehicles.

So far in 2022, the Model Y has already outsold the Ford F-150 pick-up, which racked up 562,000 sales in 2021 and is on track to beat both the Toyota Camry (681,000) and the Nissan Sentra (693,000), although it's worth noting that much of 2021 production was disrupted by the on-going semi-conductor crisis.

Back in 2021 the Toyota RAV4 commanded the number one spot with 1.1 million vehicles sold, followed closely by the Corolla, which also racked up around 1.1 million sales. The Honda CR-V, meanwhile, sat in third with volume of around 903,000.

With factories in China, California, Texas and a new plant near Berlin in Germany, the strong performance of the Tesla Model Y now adds credibility to Tesla CEO Elon Musk's claim that by 2023 its smallest battery-powered SUV would be the world's best-selling vehicle.

Analysts suggest the task ahead of Tesla won't be easy, especially since the top-selling Corolla is priced from just $US20,000 ($A31,000) in the North American market, while the Tesla Model Y lists for more than $US60,000 ($A94,000).

However, some industry commentators say there will simply not be enough buyers wealthy enough to support more than a million Model Y sales, especially with economic collapses predicted in some markets.

The Tesla Model Y was Australia’s third most popular new vehicle in September and has quickly become the nation’s top-selling EV after going on sale here in June.
