Tesla Model Y set to become world’s best-selling car

Musk claims Model Y electric SUV will overtake the Toyota Corolla on sales charts as soon as next year

The Tesla Model Y is set to become the world’s best-selling car with more than 1.2 million annual sales by 2023, according to the US electric car brand’s boss Elon Musk.

Speaking at Tesla’s recent annual shareholders’ meeting, Musk declared that the Model Y – which already leads the EV sales charts globally in 2022 – would go even further next year and become the world’s most popular car.

The Toyota Corolla has topped the charts since 1997 and last year sold more than 1.15 million units.

For the Tesla Model Y to overtake the Corolla would be an incredible feat, and all the more impressive considering that Tesla only sold 936,222 vehicles in total in 2021.

The Model Y also costs double that of a Corolla, starting at $72,300 plus on-road costs in Australia whereas the Corolla opens at $23,895 plus ORCs.

Musk told investors he remained confident that once ongoing supply issues had been addressed and the Giga Texas and Giga Berlin factories were running at full capacity the car-maker’s volumes would rapidly ramp up.

By the end of 2022, Musk claims that Tesla will have shifted 1.3 million vehicles across its full line-up.

Factor in volumes of the popular Tesla Model 3 and the US EV brand could almost double those numbers in just 12 months.
