Tesla has confirmed it will unveil its long-awaited electric pick-up later this month.
The company’s boss, Elon Musk, took to Twitter overnight to confirm the battery-powered utility – which has been dubbed Cybertruck – will be “unveiled on November 21 in LA near SpaceX Rocket factory”.
Tesla was originally due to unveil the utility mid-2019 – but as extended delays to the Tesla Model 3 proved, these timings are best treated as a guide rather than definitive.
Film buffs will note the Cybertruck’s November 21 release date also features in the original Blade Runner film. More pertinently, the date coincides with the opening of the LA motor show – likely a deliberate ploy from Tesla.
Musk has been quite vocal about the key properties of Tesla’s first pick-up, confirming in tweets over recent months that it will have a target price of $US50,000 – because “you should be able to buy a really great truck for $49k or less”.
He also said it will make the RAM seem ‘toy-like’ and will better the F-150 that it matches in size.
In terms of design, Tesla has been more speculative, with suggestions the final result could be polarising and “closer to an armoured personnel carrier of the future”.
Renderings like the one pictured here courtesy of the Tesla Model 3 Facebook page have only amplified speculation about what the Tesla pick-up will look like.
Reports suggest the utility will come with seating for six passengers as well as a driving range somewhere between 640-800km in top-spec variants.
We also know it’ll get features such as a drop-down tailgate, a 240V power socket and 360-degree cameras and sonars that allow it to parallel park on its own.
However, the idea of a full-size electric pick-up is not new, with a range of other brands planing similar models, including Ford, Chevrolet and US start-up Rivian.
Stay tuned for the latest on the Tesla pick-up on November 21. Tesla's forthcoming model expansion also includes the smaller Model Y crossover, the new Tesla Roadster and an electric big-rig.
