Tesla releases Dog Mode to ensure your furry friends stay safe

Tesla has released two unique modes for Model 3, Model X and Model S owners which have major hints of sci-fi about them.

Do you want to keep your dog comfortable in the car while letting people passing by know they don't need to worry? With Dog Mode you can. This mode will keep the climate control on at a set temperature while the car is off as well as displaying a message on the large centre screen saying that the occupants of the car are safe and looked after.

We imagine this mode can be used for other animals too, as well as kids and your grandparents, although you better check your local laws for restrictions before leaving pets and people unattended in cars.

The second new mode to come to a Tesla near you is Sentry Mode, which is a very unique type of protection for your Tesla. It will monitor the environment around the car using its external cameras when left unattended, just like a guard dog.

For example, if someone leans on the car, Sentry Mode will display a message on the centre screen warning that its cameras are recording. If a larger threat is detected, such as someone breaking a window, Sentry Mode activates the car alarm, increases the brightness of the centre display, and plays music from the car’s audio system.

Previously, Elon Musk tweeted that Sentry Mode would blast Bach’s Toccata and Fugue as well as the repeated words of “Keep Summer Safe”, which is a reference to a scene from the TV show Rick and Morty where Rick’s spaceship’s internal computer goes on a killing spree in order to protect his granddaughter. This part of Sentry Mode has been left out of this current version, thankfully.

When the alarm is in action, owners will receive an alert on their phone notifying them that an incident has occurred and will be able to download a video recording of the incident too.

As with Tesla's previous over-the-air updates these new features will be rolled out in the US first with the rest of the world to follow. So don’t leave your dog in the car by itself just yet!
