Tesla Model Y production to begin November 2019

US electric car maker to begin building Model 3-based compact SUV late next year

Tesla will begin building what could be its best-selling model in November 2019, according to information leaked to Reuters.

According to two sources working close to the US car-maker, the compact SUV, named the Model Y, will begin rolling down the Fremont California production line late next year.

Confirmation the Model Y will go on sale by early 2020 follows news that Tesla has been plagued with production delays, bottlenecks and quality control issues while the car-maker attempts to fulfil an order bank rumoured to be in exceed 500,000 vehicles.

Earlier this month Tesla attempted to reassure investors by announcing that production of its troubled Model 3 will carry on increasing to 5000 units per week through the second quarter.

According to the car-maker, Tesla is accepting preliminary bids for supplier contracts 18 months ahead of production.

This to industry experts will raise yet more eyebrows as most car-makers have chosen part suppliers at least two years before production, although a shorter timeline is theoretically feasible since there will be plenty of commonality between the Model Y and the Model 3, said experts speaking to Reuters.

Tesla has already received criticism from car industry experts after it admitted that it had entirely skipped pre-production testing for the Model 3 and jumped straight to production tooling – a practice virtually unheard of within mainstream car manufacturers.
