Tesla has announced it will offer existing Model S P90D owners in North America the option of upgrading their cars to have the Ludicrous Mode fitted.
Originally, the performance upgrade offered as an option when ordering the car new but now, for the cost of around $14,000 (our money), US owners can pay their local dealer to add the performance-boosting feature.
In Australia, the Ludicrous Mode was previously offered as a retrofit option to buyers waiting for delivery of the Model S P85D after the newer P90D was launched.
However, Tesla Australia says it has no plans to offer the Ludicrous Mode as a retrofit option for the P90D here.
The Ludicrous Mode is more than a software tweak. It involves engineers adding an advanced smart fuse that allows the Lithium-ion cells to ramp up the maximum output they offer from 1300amps to 1500amps.
This dramatically ramps up performance, with the US car-maker claiming that the Model S P90D is ten per cent faster to 60mph (97km/h) with a time of just 2.8 seconds.
Overall, with Ludicrous Mode fitted the Model S P90D is said to be 20 per cent faster to its 250km/h top speed (limited).
