Tesla has announced that five of its Supercharger stations in New South Wales are now available to all EV owners – across all vehicle brands – from today, as part of plans to ultimately unlock its entire Australian public rapid-charging network.
The five Tesla Supercharger sites are located in Narooma, Hollydene, West Tamworth, Dubbo and Bathurst, providing additional recharging options for EV drivers in regional locations.
This is the first time Tesla has unlocked any of its proprietary Supercharger stations – now comprising more than 50 sites – since launching its Australian network in 2014.
The five sites comprise 120kW Supercharger stations, with costs varying depending on location and other factors.
At the time of writing, the charge varied between 58 and 66 cents per kilowatt-hour.
Tesla says pricing for non-Tesla owners will reflect “additional costs incurred to support charging a broad range of vehicles and adjustments to our sites to accommodate these vehicles”.
“Rates vary by site, and you can view charging prices in the Tesla app. The per kilowatt-hour price to charge can be lowered with a charging membership,” the company said.
Tesla reiterated it will eventually provide access to its entire network of Superchargers but hasn’t committed to a timeframe.
It first announced plans to unlock its global network in 2021.
“Today we are opening five Supercharger stations in New South Wales to non-Tesla EVs,” Tesla said in a statement.
“It has always been Tesla’s ambition to open the Supercharger network to non-Tesla EVs, and by doing so, encourage more drivers to go electric. This move directly supports Tesla’s mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.
“More customers using the Supercharger network enables faster expansion. Our goal is to learn and iterate quickly, while continuing to expand the network, so we can eventually welcome both Tesla and non-Tesla drivers at every Supercharger worldwide.”
The move is likely to polarise opinion among existing Tesla owners, who have enjoyed access to a greater number of charging stations than non-Tesla EV drivers.
