The survey which coincides with International Name Your Car Day (October 2), put the call out to carsales members to share what names they have given their cars and why. Of the over 400 members surveyed, 57% said that they have given their car a name.
28% of those who gave their car a name had a white car, while 15% owned a red or silver vehicle. This was followed by black and blue car owners at 13%. Interestingly, Toyota (12%), Ford (11%) and Mazda (7%) owners were far more likely to bestow a name on their set of wheels compared to Subaru (3%), Hyundai and Porsche (2%) owners.
When it came to the most popular names, cars with human names rose to the top with Gary, Jack and Betty resonating with owners. Other human names given to cars included Angelique, Britney, Dwayne, Wendy and Yvette.
Names inspired by the colour of the car also proved popular with Silver Bullet, Ruby, Black Opal and Blue Thunder making the cut. Some pop culture characters made an appearance too with cars named Obi-Wan, Moby Dick, Mr Squiggle, Papa Smurf and Snoopy on our roads.
Sometimes, being inspired by the brand or model name of the car was enough for some car owners with names such as Heidi Hyundai, The Mighty Merc, Miss Mazza, Missy Rangie, Qashcar, Tessie and Viv the Vito.
So why do people land on specific names for their cars? This is what carsales members had to say.
Renault Van in grey a.k.a. Vandalf the Grey
“It’s a big grey Renault Van. We intend to do the big circuit and every van needs a name. - and its a pun on it being a big grey van."
Mercedes-Benz a.k.a. Merv
"Typo in an email to wife 'We will go in Merv', should be 'We will go in the Merc'. It stuck."
VW Tiguan Allspace in white a.k.a. Obi Wan
"Looks a bit like a Star Wars Stormtrooper helmet. In the theme of Star Wars, Obi-Wan rhymes with Tiguan. Pretty farfetched but we like it."
Haval Jolion a.k.a. Jolene
"I have a black Haval Jolion and I found the name Jolene suited it based off Dolly Parton’s song. She’s a sexy and sleek car that looks like it could take your man."
Skoda Octavia a.k.a. Fluffy Chicken
"Our daughter mistook the Skoda badge for a chicken with ruffled feathers. Once you see it you can’t un-see it."
